What Is a Clinical Research Trial?

Health Canada requires that Clinical Research Trials be conducted in order to develop new treatments, preventions and devices for diseases or conditions. Clinical Research Trials are also referred to as Clinical Studies or Clinical Trials.

There are strict regulations that the trial doctors and their staff must follow when conducting Clinical Research Trials.

There are important things to know about participating in a Clinical Research Trial

1. Your participation is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time.
2. All information about you will be kept confidential.
3. Before you participate in a study a doctor or nurse from the Clinical Research Trial team will explain all the details about the study to you, including any potential risks or benefits and answer all your questions.
4. You will have as much time as you need to decide if you want to participate.
5. If you decide to participate you will be asked to sign a consent form. You will get to keep a copy of this consent form and additional information about the Clinical Research Trial.

Every Clinical Research Trial is submitted to Health Canada for their review and to an Independent Research Ethics Board for approval before the study can be performed.

Help Research

In order to develop new treatments or preventions for diseases or conditions we need the support of individuals and members of the medical community to further research.

Research can not work without the help of volunteers who participate in studies. Clinical Research Trials involve a team of people working together. The team is lead by a doctor who is assisted by other doctors, nurses and support staff. The patient that participates in a study is also part of that team.

The doctors and nurses that are conducting research studies are members of your local community and are working hard to develop new treatments. Over recent years a number of significant medical breakthroughs have been made, but there is still a lot of work to do.

You can help by contacting us to find out more information about a study on our Current Clinical Research Trials page that you may qualify for. You can then determine if the study is right for you.

Physicians, surgeons, nurses and other medical staff can help by referring patients to study physicians or by informing the public about the work that is being done.

Medical personnel can also contact us to get additional information on the studies and the research that we conduct.
